Strategies for supporting Newly Arrived Pupils in the Classroom

When children arrive from overseas with very little or no English, they need to feel safe and valued before they can begin to learn. In busy, time-strapped classrooms, creating the spaces for this to happen is often difficult. This course, delivered by a teacher with over 30 years’ experience of teaching newly arrived EAL pupils, will share ideas with participants on how to:

  • Welcome and include newly arrived pupils into daily school routines
  • Engage with parents to make the whole family’s experience positive
  • Adapt teaching plans to include pupils in the early stages of acquiring English
  • Choose activities that support curriculum and language learning

I am an excellent teacher of EAL because…

… if you are a teacher who has children learning English as an Additional Language in your class, you are a teacher of EAL, whether you feel prepared and trained for this challenge or not. This course offers participants the chance to reflect on their classroom practice, and on their attitudes towards other languages which will affect how they interact with and empower EAL pupils to flourish. Led by an experienced trainer, this course will consider:

  • The challenges pupils face when learning academic English and some practical solutions
  • Everyday strategies and ideas to improve pupils’ literacy skills
  • How to create an inclusive learning environment in which pupils from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds can thrive

Assessing pupils learning EAL: Avoiding Invisible Pupils

There is no national EAL assessment system in place in the UK, even though this could be enormously useful to schools. While the progress of children in the early stages of learning EAL is often easy to see as their rate of acquiring conversational English can be relatively quick, children who need to develop academic English to progress further, can sometimes become invisible. They appear to cope with day-to-day learning while their language development plateaus. Participants at this training will therefore reflect on:

  • Their school’s current EAL assessment and monitoring systems, how they work and how they inform practice
  • How to collect a range of data and assess pupils’ oracy and literacy skills
  • When and how to set language learning targets
  • Strategies to avoid invisibility
