Description
Word clines are a great way to explore language, especially when they are supported by visual clues.
Great to display as a visual prompt, you can also use them as a kinasthetic activity for children to manipulate as part of a working wall display.
Have a look at this example showing levels of movement.
Clines can introduce learners to a range of similar words that reflect feelings, emotions and states of being. The language learnning involved in this activity comes from the discussions you will have around word intensity or quality and the level of meaning it conveys.
They can be used as a lesson starter, to encourage children to work collaboratively together and discuss new vocabulary related to a topic. Contextualising the words in sentences, demonstrates how they can alter the urgency, intensity or level of meaning in a spoken or written text.
