Description
Barrier games, or information gap activities as they are sometimes known, are brilliant for encouraging learners to talk. This game has pictures of basic foods that most pupils should recognise. As there are more than two photos to represent each item, learners have to draw on their language reserves to describe the pictures more accurately so that their partner knows which picture they are talking about.
If a learner is not sure what their partner is describing, they can ask questions to clarify. This process is known as ‘negotiating meaning’ and is a really important part of learning English as an Additional Language.
